Many times we use the word Virtual Server. What is it actually and whats the need of it.Lets try to find out.
When we use the term server, the first thought that comes to our mind is that its a computer used to host a website or a computer on which some application is deployed. And its absolutely correct but at the same time another question which comes to us is that do we need a dedicated separate computer to act as a server for each applicationwebsite to be hosted ?
Now here comes the concept of a Virtual Server.A single computer can be used to act as multiple servers.A server, say a Web server, shares computer resources with other virtual servers. In this context, the virtual part simply means that it is not a dedicated server — that is, the entire computer is not dedicated to running the server software.A virtual server is a logical entity that is configured on a physical server. This logical entity acts as an independent server.
The concept of Virtual servers is so much popular because it enables low cost web hosting services as Virtual servers provide a way to host multiple Web sites on one physical server. Instead of requiring a separate computer for each server, dozens of virtual servers can co-reside on the same computer. In most cases, performance is not affected and each web site behaves as if it is being served by a dedicated server. However, if too many virtual servers reside on the same computer, or if one virtual server starts over usage of resources, Web pages will be delivered more slowly.
